Cultural Associations

Besides studysport and student associations, Groningen has many more associations where you can dedicate your free hours. Always wanted to show off your music talent in a band? Or perhaps you are a passionate dancer or actor and would like to perform on stage? You can then join one of the several cultural student associations in Groningen and share your passion with other students. Don’t be afraid if performing on stage is not your cup of tea, there are also plenty of associations that visit theatre and music performances for fun. And if you are completely new in the area of culture, than you can see this as the ultimate chance to discover a whole new side of yourself!

Usva
Usva is the Cultural Student Centre of Groningen and an initiative of the University of Groningen. The Cultural Centre of Usva is located in a former bank building of ABN Banks at the Munnekeholm. While the CAST is a cultural meeting point to share culture with other people, Usva is a cultural centre where you can practice a various range of different classes. From dance and music to expressive arts and drama; everything is possible! Also, every course is taught by a professional instructor, so you definitely learn the skills from the best. And because it is a cultural centre exclusively for students, the price shouldn’t be a drawback; as a student you will receive a nice discount on all of the courses.

Worried all of the courses might only be in Dutch? Don’t! Most courses are also accessible to international students, as only a handful of courses require a proficiency in Dutch. Some of the courses such as Acting Classes are even taught only in English. This means the classes are a mixture of both international and Dutch students. So besides indulging yourself in the world of culture and creativity, you can also see this as an opportunity to socialize with Dutch students!

In total there are around seventy courses offered at Usva. You can follow courses in the area of dance, body & mind, music, multimedia, expressive arts, literature and drama. Always been fascinated how Egyptian belly dancing works? At Usva you can learn how to move like a real Egyptian! But you can also choose for modern dance, tap dance, hip hop and street dance. All of the dance courses are offered in different levels from beginners to advanced. When you would like to focus more on you inner peace, the body&mind section of Usva might be interesting for you. More interested in following music courses? When you have your own instrument, you can follow a wide range of music courses such as guitar and piano lessons at Usva. But even when you’re not in the possession of a grand piano (we won’t forget you’re still a student!) you can also make use of a piano or DJ-set of Usva for very low rates. You can buy a card at the front desk of Usva, which gives access to the piano or DJ-set a few times a week. Other than that, there can also be courses followed in the area of multimedia, arts and drama.

More information can be found on the website of Usva (both in English and Dutch).

De CAST
De CAST stands for Cultural Activities for Students and is an initiative of the Hanze University Groningen. The activities are organised together with and for students of the Hanze University Groningen. Music, films, creative workshops, theatre performances and lectures, everything cultural and fun is organised by de CAST. And most of the time it is free of charge!

You can choose yourself if you want to participate as an active or passive student with de CAST; you can participate actively by bringing in new ideas and organising an event while even earning some extra study credits, or you can choose to be on the background and enjoy the events by listening and watching them.

Events that are organised by de CAST usually take place in the Culture Café at the Hanze University Groningen. The Culture Café is a creative, fun and comfortable place where you can hang out during your lunch break or free hours, while having some relaxing music on the background. As culture is something you can share with other people, the Culture Café is the ideal location to talk about music with people, to watch a movie or to just meet a whole lot of new, interesting and fun people!

More information about de CAST can be found on the website (both in English and Dutch)
