The OrbitFest is an annual winter light festival happening in the city center of Groningen. This year the topic of the festival is Heliopolis, the city of Future. The event was held between 15th and 17th December,2017. OrbitFest is where the fantasy and reality merge into one in the city of talent, Groningen.

The festival consisted of lighting works of art, experiments, live events, workshop and interactive installations. The story of this year’s edition – Heliopolis which is about fascination with space travel and the nearest star, the Sun. The event is held during the winter solstice and the festival is celebrating the Sun’s return. The solstice occurs twice each year (around June 21 and December 21), and it is basically when the Sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. It is the winter solstice day in the Northern Hemisphere is the darkest day of the year.

The event was spread among different locations and time in Groningen. Places as Der A-Kerk, The North Ship Museum, Synagogue Groningen and other were among the OrbitFest locations.

Moreover, some of the lights exhibitions were accompanied by psychedelic electronic music and digital colors moving in the rhythm of the music which made the experience spiritual and relaxing. At the festival also, the future food was presented as bread made from algae and cheese made with vegetable oils that are rich in unsaturated fat. The festival was happening during the opening of the Christmas market, thus all the Christmas lights and the art lights illuminated the city and made the environment more cozy and inspirational.
