First Year Mentor Group

In the first year everyone is arranged a mentor group. However, it’s not just a regular studying mentor group, but we also do social activities together!

I remembered the first week in Groningen, all of us gathered together and introduce ourselves in a tutor room. Everybody was still new to the concept of university, and a mentor group was a nice way to overcome the high school – university transition. You can always ask questions and share your problems to your mentor, which is really nice. Every once in a while there will be a mentor group meeting where everybody in the mentor group meet each other and talk about our study. We share study tips and tricks, our goals, etc. to each other. This makes sure that we are always at the right track for our study.

This mentor group was also the group for our first course ‘Bacteria to Plastic’ where we make poly lactic acid by the help of bacteria. In this course we are introduced to the basic knowledge of practical courses (lab journals, procedures, etc.) by the mentor.

PLA - short of Poly Lactic Acid, believe it or not, it is a plastic made of food. So, might this be the solution for our future?

However, a mentor group is not limited with only doing study – related things. Instead, our mentor group also does social activities together. For instance, A few weeks ago, we had dinner together and laser tag for only eleven euro for two sessions every Thursday because it’s student night.

We played the game at Target Lasergame, it was a really cool place because it has two floors for the game. We split into two groups and compete to get more points. It was really a blast! I recommend this place to everybody, and don’t forget to reserve a place before!

I think it’s really nice that all of use still get together although it’s already more than half way of the year where you already manage to be a university student from a high schooler. And who knows, I might be interested in being a mentor in the upcoming years! It would be really cool to lead a mentor group!
