Inconsistent Sunrise and Sunsets

I’ve always thought that the sun will set at 6 pm and rise at 6 am for my entire life. However, once I got here I have to face the peculiar fact that in the summer the sun still shines until 10 pm but in the winter it can already be dark at 3 pm.

Believe it or not, this affected me a lot the first time I got here in the summer. I am used to wake up to the sunshine that I found myself already awake at 4 am in the morning. Also, I would be hungry for dinner when it’s getting dark but all of the sudden it was already 10 pm. I really felt that my biological clock was not functioning properly. On the contrary, during winter I overslept a lot of times and got hungry earlier.

Not to mention there is also the daylight saving time. I was not a keen researcher before I came here to the Netherlands. I didn’t even know what it is until my friends told me that the time would go back 1 hour. This year, the daylight saving time was on 25 October. From 3 o’clock the time sets back to 2 o’clock, giving us 25 hours of time for that day. As a result, the time difference between here and Indonesia became 6 hours. This actually helps me since it would be easier for me to have skype calls with my family and friends. I can call them here at late night while it is in the morning there before they get ready for the day.

Long story short, this is one of the little ‘surprises’ I got as it was the first time for me being somewhere so different and far from my home. What’s your little surprise the first time here in the Netherlands?
