Although the Dutch weather can be enormously unpredictable, the new students joining this year's KEI-week didn’t have to complain; the air was bright and the sun was shining; the perfect weather for a week full of activities, concerts and most of all lots of socializing!
The KEI-Week is the main introduction week in Groningen for new students of the Hanze University and the University of Groningen, both national and international. Joining the KEI-Week is the ideal opportunity to meet other first-year students, to get to know the city and learn about student life in general. Students who participate form a group together with around fifteen other first year students – which could be students from all kinds of study programmes. Usually the leader of the KEI-group is a senior student who leads the new students around the city for the whole week; an ideal opportunity to learn all the ins and outs of student life in Groningen!
The KEI-Week is a popular event for all students in Groningen and the grand opening is always located on the Grote Markt in the heart of the city centre; it is known for hosting popular (Dutch) artists who always make the whole town move to their beats!
This year’s KEI-Week took place from Monday the 15th to Friday the 19th of August. Sascha Visser hosted the grand opening, with accompanying performances from Lange Frans & the Handsome Poets. When cycling through the city centre on Sunday evening you could already see the preparations that were made; long tables and tents were installed on the Vismarkt, and the Grote Markt transformed itself into a huge stage.
During the whole week the entire city centre of Groningen was controlled by students; on Tuesday the streets were filled with student associations presenting themselves in every possible way, while on Wednesday a Cultural Festival occupied the city centre during the famous student parade in which you could explore all kinds of arts, Friday was reserved for the final after party.
We know for sure that every new student that joined the KEI-Week this year will say they look back on an amazing, though exhausting week, in which they got to know all ins and outs of student life in Groningen. And that was only the beginning!
Were you unfortunate to miss the KEI-Week? Don’t worry; ESN Groningen is organising an introduction week especially for new international students that will be held from the 2nd till the 7th of September. Click here for more information!
