As you probably all know, in the Netherlands and therefore also in Groningen it usually rains a lot and sometimes several weeks pass without the sun coming out. During the year I spent in Groningen there were many occasions when I checked the weather forecast only to realise that it was going to rain all day or all weekend long. In the beginning of the academic year, I felt uneasy every time I saw this; I was hesitant to go out. Not like I would melt, but it was just cosier to stay in. However, as the year progressed, I learnt to embrace the rain. So here are 4 great tips for handling a rainy weekend in Groningen (Part 1).

Having Fun Indoors

Let’s start the list with ideas that you can do indoors while it is raining outside. You can do these activities alone, but they are also good for groups of friends or roommates, and they vary from fun projects to productive tasks. So let’s dive in!

  1. Have a movie marathon. When it’s cold outside and it’s raining, one of the best things to do is to cosy up with some blankets and pillows and to watch all those movies that you always wanted to or to re-watch your old favourites. If you need some alone time, you can do this by yourself but it works just as well with some friends, your housemates, or with your significant other. Choose a movie, make some popcorn, hot tea or hot chocolate and enjoy!

  2. Have a self-care day. As university students, sometimes we don’t have a lot of time to relax. Juggling classes, work, friends, extracurricular activities, etc. can be a hard and tiring job. Recharging is, however, essential and a rainy Saturday or Sunday can be the best time to do so. So, forget about all the work you think you should be doing, and pamper yourself! Make yourself a warm bath, set up some candles, and add some bubbles or herbs to make it more special. Wash your hair and put on some lotion, then catch up on some reading and take pleasure in reconnecting with yourself!

  3. Be productive. Rainy days can also be the perfect time to be active indoors and do some work that needs to be done. For example, you can clean your house, flat, or room. By putting on some music and asking your housemates to join in, you can combine the boring job of cleaning with for example a fun dance party. After cleaning and dancing around the house, you can continue the pleasant productivity. You can either work out together by doing some yoga or bodyweight exercises or you can catch up on some work for school. Either way doing these activities with your housemates can be both entertaining and satisfactory, so make sure to try it sometimes!

  4. Play a board game. When it’s cold outside, one of the best things to do is to invite a group of friends to your house, grab all your board games, and play. Don’t have any board games with you? No problem! You can always invent a new game with whatever props you have at home. If you don’t have any ideas, you can google some activities, play a one-word story game, or you can do a karaoke night with the help of YouTube. Already in the mood for a lazy but fun day? Call your friends and start playing!
