It is finally December! Christmas isn’t far anymore, there is Christmas music played everywhere and all the pretty lights are up in town again. For a real Christmas-atmosphere, something is missing: A Christmas Market.
Groningen unfortunately does not have a big one going on the whole December. There are, however, some small events on the weekends.
December 8th and 9th there is a Swedish Christmas Market in the Oude Suikerfabriek
December 15th there is a Christmas Market in the Martinikerk
December 23rd, EM even hosts a vegan Christmas Market
And as every year, the WinterWelVaart will be in Groningen again. This very special Chrismas Market takes place on the boats on the canal close to A-Brug. This year, it takes place from December 21st to 23rd.
In the fortress of Bourtange, a unique historical defences, there is a Christmas Market all weekends except for the last weekend of December as well.
In the southern parts of the Netherlands, there are some more events worth travelling to as well. In Maastricht, there is a Christmas Market the whole of December. In Leiden, there is one floating on water from mid-december on. And in Amsterdam there are different events, but from December 14th on there will be a Winter Wonderland close to Museumplein with an ice rink and the traditional stalls with good food and hand-crafted gifts.
Further, it is quite easy to travel from Groningen to the country where Christmas Markets originated in: Germany! Within a 3-hour train ride are for example the cities Leer, Oldenburg and Bremen. Group tickets from the Deutsche Bahn are available from 10€ up, just check bahn.de for the ‘Niedersachsen-Ticket plus Groningen’. Other nice cities to visit for a Christmas Market are Münster, Hannover or Hamburg, but they are a bit further away.
Wherever you go, enjoy a day with Glühwein, traditional food and the great atmosphere at a Christmas Market!
