Fraeylemaborg day trip
With every day, we are getting closer to the summer. It is warmer, and the days are longer, and we get the urges to see new things and enjoy the beautiful weather. Visit Fraeylemaborg for a day and release all the stress surrounded by history, green nature, and animals!
The Fraeylemaborg is a village/castle of Slochteren which is located East of Groningen. The ancient house is a village by itself, surrounded by water. It originated in 1300. These houses were built in the Middle Ages to store harvests and protect it from robbers. The fortress was used by rich people who owned the land. Currently, the fortress is a museum that you can visit. In the museum, you will be able to see the old style of living, the kitchen, bathroom, sleeping rooms and storage places. The museum is often used for exhibitions, concerts, and weddings. Near the fortress, a café and a restaurant are located where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with the view of the fortress. The museum is open every day except Monday from 10:00 am till 17:00. The price for the museum entre is 7 euro, and for free for Museum Card holders. Fraeylemaborg is one of the most visited museums in Groningen area.
The park is designed in English landscape style. It is spacious, green and with many paths for walking. In the park are planted exotic trees and imported unusual plants. As well, there is placed art in some places within the park called follies. The follies are unusual and create a fairytale-like adventure. The park is always opened from the sunrise till sunset.
How do I reach it?
Bus line 178 from Groningen Central station will bring you directly to bus stop Noorderweg, Slochteren. The bus price is 8,80 two ways with an ov-chipcard. You can also reach it by bike and it is 19km one way which takes approximately an hour.
