Who is Kristian Kostov?
Kristian Kostov is half Bulgaria, half Russian musician who had his major success by finishing 2nd on Eurovision 2017 with the song Beautiful Mess. He is just 17 years old and he already won so many competitions by reaching prestigious places as X factor Bulgaria and The Voice Kids Russia. On 17th January 2018, Kristian won the Public Choice Award part of the European Border Breaker Awards that is believed to be one of the most influential awards that gives an opportunity to musicians to become famous. He is also the first Bulgarian ever to win the award and to reach 2nd place on Eurovision. His musical influence and couch is Dima Bilan who is super popular Russian pop star.
Why I wanted to meet him?
Everything sounds so important and big and honestly, I am not even an Eurovision person. But I got very excited when Kristian reached 2nd place in Eurovision presenting Bulgaria. As well, I was even more proud of him because I am also half Bulgarian, half Russian person. His mum is from Kazakhstan and mine as well, that is why I couldn’t help it and just ask to do an interview with him.
First and foremost, I would like to thank Kristian Kostov for having the time to make this interview with us.
Hi Kristian, how are you? Is this your first time in Groningen? Do you plan to see something here?
Kristian: Hi, I feel great. It is my first time in Groningen, but I have been in Amsterdam. Here is very cold. I would like to come back and meet my amazing fans who came to here from Germany and everywhere. It is great!
So, you are half Bulgarian- half Russian. How do you feel about presenting 2 countries in the same time?
Kristian: Actually, I am representing 3 countries- Bulgaria, Russia and Kazakhstan! I love the diversity.
You are super young and already very successful. The pressure of performing at very good level probably it is there. Tell us what do you do to release the stress because it might be useful for Groningen students during the exam period.
Kristian: No, it is not! I never stress! I am really happy to be on the stage and show what I can do. It is an honor to be here at the EBBA Awards. It is my dream come true so if you really love what you do, you don’t worry and stress about it! My advice to students is trying to do what you love and everything else will be fine!
Do you have plans to study something or somewhere because in Groningen we have a great conservatory…
Kristian: Hahah, thank you for the invitation! Right now, I do not want to study. I chose to work! Actually, I was accepted in Boston Conservatory but maybe I will chose studying later on in my life. I want to do my career.
What was your first reaction when you heard that you are going to Euovision?
Kristian: Well, I did not want to go. I was just 16 and I had my final exams in high school, so I had to ask my parents. I thought, I cannot manage it because also Eurovision is very responsible task to represent a country. I still went to the Bulgarian national competition and when they selected me, I couldn’t believe it but then I decided that I have to take this chance and go!
You did great! Tell us the story of the song Beautiful Mess that brought to you and Bulgaria success.
Kristian: Beautiful Mess is a world where you can paint it the way you want. It is about the things you love. When you love somebody it really helps you to overcome everything and be a stronger person. I would like every person to find the love!
Congratulations for the award! What is your first reaction when you heard that you have been nominated for European Border Breakers Awards?
Kristian: Thank you! Wow, I again couldn’t believe it! It is an honor to be here where musicians, who I love, like Dua Lipa and Adele got their awards. I am looking forward to the show tonight and to enjoy the music!
