Shopping and Groceries

Since Groningen is one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands, the city has a wide variation in shops varying from luxury brands such as Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger till the typical Dutch well-known low budget store Zeeman. Shopping addicts can definitely spend their money on everything shiny and glamorous, while food addicts can fill their tummy in one of the many dining cafes. Who says a student needs to live on dry bread and water in order to follow the latest trends? We will provide you with a quick tour through the shopping area of Groningen.

The Herestraat in Groningen is the longest shopping street in the city, and houses many well-known Dutch and international stores. Fashion addicts can shop here for shoes (Invito), clothes (Zara, Mango, Vero Moda and many more) or music (Free Record Shop). When taking a break from shopping you can grab a coffee at the small but cosy Coffee United. Really hungry? You can always grab a Big Mac at Mac Donalds.

However, the Herestraat is not the only shopping street in Groningen. Do you fancy a bit more original clothing, some creative furniture or organic food? It is definitely worth to visit the many small sub-streets surrounding the city centre. You will discover more original and less standard shops that are definitely worth a visit! The Folkingstraat is often said to be the cosiest street of Groningen, and houses many stores specialised in art, interior design and lifestyle. Do you want your room to look less like an Ikea showroom? When you’re looking for paintings, dinnerware (Lily & Rose) or antiques; here you will have choice in many special treasures. When you want to treat yourself with healthy and organic food you can visit Puur! Natural Food.

Another hidden treasure in the city centre is music store Plato. Music lovers will find this heaven. From rock, indie, hip hop, soul or jazz, every music genre can be found. The store also characterises itself by the many attractive bargains that can be found throughout the store on a prominent spot.

Tired from all the shopping and you still need to do your groceries for the rest of the week? Groningen offers a variety of grocery stores in the city centre and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Supermarkets offering standard prices are for example Albert Heijn, Super de Boer and Jumbo.

Temporarily on a budget? You will find cheap groceries at the discount stores Aldi and Lidl. Albert Heijn can be found everywhere in and surrounding the city centre. Discount store Aldi can even be found in the middle of the centre, located right next to warehouse V&D. A Lidl store can be found in for example the neighbourhoods Paddepoel and Helpman. If you want to know where the nearest supermarket is, simply check the map of your area or neighbourhood on Google Maps.

Have the ambition to become as stylish as Paris Hilton? It won’t be hard when visiting Groningen’s shopping area!
